Author: Ian Spelling
A veteran journalist and editor, Ian Spelling's association with Star Trek dates back to the early 1980s, when he attended his first conventions and conducted interviews with Gene Roddenberry, Majel Barrett, George Takei, Walter Koenig, James Doohan, and Mark Lenard. He later went on to cover Star Trek in depth for Starlog; the official magazines for The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and several of the feature films; the New York Times Syndicate, in which he had a weekly column (Inside Trek, which ran for twenty-plus years and appeared in newspapers around the U.S. and Canada, and on CompuServe); and the official Star Trek Magazine (now Star Trek Explorer). He also served as editor of StarTrek.com from 2010 to 2019 and moderates panels at Star Trek conventions. Spelling even appeared as an extra in two episodes, portraying a Bajoran on Deep Space Nine (“Sanctuary”) and a Drayan on Voyager (“Innocence”), and has provided commentary for several Star Trek documentaries, including What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
