The ghost of what happened on the Miyazaki is never far away and the truth of what was stolen from a destroyed Federation starbase is revealed. What’s so valuable that it’s attracted the attention of seasoned criminals like the Venari Ral?

Log Entry

The first year for the cadets is at an end and everyone is in the mood for celebrating their three-hundredth night. The USS Athena, captained by Nahla Ake, is en route to Betazed for the planet’s inauguration as the new seat of Federation government.

Genesis Lythe, Jay-Den Kraag and Caleb Mir take part in a Klingon bonding ritual

En route, Jay-Den Kraag performs a Klingon bonding ritual with Genesis Lythe, Darem Reymi, SAM and Caleb Mir. The ritual welcomes Jay-Den’s fellow cadets into his House.

After the ceremony, Caleb meets Tarima in a turbolift. They begin to talk but are soon joined by many other cadets and so Tarima exits the turbolift.

Admiral Vance holographically meeting with Ake and Kelrec

In Ake’s office, Admiral Charles Vance gives Chancellors Ake and Kelrec a briefing over the holographic communications system. He confirms what classified weapon Nus Braka stole during the Miyazaki incident: an Omega particle. It has been fashioned into Omega-47 mines, super-weapons capable of cutting off worlds just like the Burn did. When Kelrec suggests cancelling the journey to Betazed, Vance refuses, not wanting to abandon Betazed again.

In Caleb Mir’s quarters, Caleb and SAM talk, SAM admitting she didn’t like her former self. Caleb is still looking for messages from his mother, Anisha Mir. With SAM’s help, he manages to decrypt two years worth of messages from her.

SAM assisting Caleb

Caleb and SAM discover Anisha is on the planet Ukeck. They also learn it’s under a Federation travel ban because of Venari Ral activity.

Caleb discusses an imminent Federation retreat with Ake but promptly leaves. In a corridor, he encounters Tarima. He wishes her well and appreciatively says her name sounds like music to him.

Tarima being complimented by Caleb

Caleb attempts to take a shuttle and is joined by SAM, who wants to accompany him to Ukeck. They are soon joined by Genesis and a drunk Darem. SAM decides the fastest way to travel to Ukeck is to use a transwarp tunnel.

When Tarima can’t find Caleb, Jay-Den shows her the messages from Caleb’s mother. She begins to fear the worst.

Traversing the transwarp tunnel, the shuttle encounters difficulties. However, SAM manages to stabilise it.

The shuttlecraft hurtling towards Ukeck

In her office on the Athena, Ake discusses Nus Braka with Jett Reno. They are joined by Jay-Den and Tarima, looking guilty.

On Ukeck, Caleb separates from his three friends. They leave in search of parts they need for their shuttle.

While Jett Reno works nearby and The Doctor enters, Vance has a conversation with Ake

Ake reports the group’s disappearance to Admiral Vance while the other cadets are being offloaded to Betazed. Vance deduces her intention is to go after the missing cadets and permits her to take the Athena to the edge of Federation space but no further than that toward Ukeck. The Doctor and Reno offer Ake assistance.

Back on Ukeck, Caleb is confronted by his mother, Anisha. She tearfully realises who he is, as mother and son are at last reunited.

Anisha realising she’s finally found her son

Caleb and his mother have a long-needed conversation, after which he introduces her to his friends. Anisha at first suspects them of being Venari Ral spies but Caleb vouches for them, omitting that they have come from the Federation. Genesis explains that their damaged shuttle needs parts.

Ake, Reno and The Doctor take the Athena to the border of Federation space, discovering stowaways Jay-Den and Tarima. Ake confines them to her office and orders a search for the missing shuttle.

Anisha and Caleb collaborating with each other

Anisha and the cadets work on constructing components, while Ake breaks orders by taking the Athena over the border to Ukeck. The Venari Ral annex the planet. Inspired by his mother, Caleb plans to leave with her rather than remaining with the cadets. He criticises them and vice versa before he separates from them. They are caught by Venari Ral operatives but Caleb, revealing to Anisha that they are Federation citizens, leaves her in an attempt to rescue them.

With Anisha’s help, Caleb tries to save his friends but fails. The Athena descends into the atmosphere and beams the group up, including Anisha. The Doctor has an emotional reunion with SAM. As the Venari Ral attack the Athena, Ake orders a saucer separation, knowing she’s dumping the Sato Atrium and the nacelles. Nus Braka has surrounded Federation space with Omega-47 mines, isolating the Athena from the Federation. The ship begins transmitting a distress call. To be continued…

While the Athena is stranded, Omega-47 mines envelop Federation space

Status Report

The found family dynamic between the cadets is shown well in this episode. This is first demonstrated with Jay-Den Kraag’s inclusion of his fellow cadets in a Klingon bonding ritual. The found family dynamic also comes across between The Doctor and SAM, a natural progression from the previous episode, “The Life of the Stars”. At the heart of the show are Caleb’s search for his mother, Anisha, and the interactions between them, which also reinforce the family theme.

In addition to The Doctor, there’s another callback to Star Trek: Voyager in this episode, with the Omega particle returning from the episode “The Omega Directive”. The revelation here that the Omega particle is the reason why Nus Braka attacked a Federation starbase in the episode “Come, Let’s Away” raises the stakes just as high as that episode did, if not higher.

Some viewers may miss the notorious personal antics of Nus Braka while watching this episode, since he’s repeatedly referenced but doesn’t appear. However, his absence serves the plot well, preparing the viewer for his next appearance.

Rating: 4.5/5

This entertaining penultimate episode showcases typically brilliant directing by Jonathan Frakes. He impressively mixes the high stakes of the Omega particle with the emotional vulnerability of Caleb’s search for his mother and what happens when he finds her. The episode concludes with a stunning cliffhanger which compels the viewer to watch the tenth and final episode in the first season of Starfleet Academy.
